CERT class

My grandson found out today that he is going to start getting un-employment money again.  He will get it until October.  I am not sure if this means that FL did accept the federal money or not.
Russell is talking about going in the military.  He wants to go in for a number of reasons.  One is that he can not find a job and one is that he wants some of the benefits of going in the military.

I put a Joomla! site back up again. I just wanted to pay with the Joomla! software again.  It is a lot of work but it has so much power and if I was a little smarter I could do some pretty neat things with it.

I am feeling a little better now.  I did not take the Doxazosin Mesylate last night.  I said I was not going to take it anymore but I am worrying about Sunday.  Sunday I will  have my first CERT class and it is 8 hours.  I have to get there by bus without a bathroom visit and then I will be in class for 8 hours and I do not want to be running to the bathroom all the time.

I am not in CA, I am in FL, but here is a little video that gives you a little idea of CERT training.

Slot machines at Miami International Airport?

The Miami Herald has a report that slot machines could come soon to the Miami International Airport.  Miami Dade County needs new sources of cash to meet rising airport costs.
I think that we have to stop looking at gambling to pay for everything.  Where will it end?
Now having said that…  Miami is a place that people come to for travel, recreation and leisure.  I could see slot machines at the airport.
But the addition of slot machines at the airport is going to add problems.  Will the machines be in a public area for all people to use or just those that are using the airport?  They would add to security problems at MIA.  You have to worry about crime and crooks.  If it is open to the public you would have additional traffic and parking problems.
If MIA can not make money with the thousands of people flying in and out of MIA then maybe they just need to shut down.  Or they may need new management.

Goodbye Wackenhut

Wackenhut Security has been the security company doing security for years for the Miami-Dade Transit system.  They been doing the security for 20 years.  They been making $17 million a year.
I been reading about over billing for years and amounts that run from $6 to $3 million.
It appears that a new company has the contract.

Last Sunday Chevor Wint a security officer with Security Alliance was shot and killed at work by two men.  I think he was doing security for the transit system.  He was killed the Metrorail’s Earlington Heights station.

Miami-Dade moves to replace firm providing transit security
  “…
The county manager is recommending that 50 State Security provide armed officers at all Metrorail and Metromover stations. A joint venture combining Professional Protection and Investigations Inc. and Security Alliance is also proposed to provide unarmed guards at all bus and rail maintenance facilities.

Separately, Allied Barton Security Services is recommended to take over security at the county's Juvenile Services Department, a job held by Wackenhut since 1998.

The proposals are scheduled to go before the Budget, Planning and Sustainability Committee on May 12 and the County Commission on June 2.

But even if commissioners agree to remove Wackenhut, the security firm may not go before its contract expires in November. The reason: Burgess said a transition to new security firms will take at least three months.

''It doesn't just happen overnight,'' he said…”

My God, does this story, in the Miami Herald, mean that not only was the guard killed brand new to working transit security but that he was not armed?

Liberty Ship Sunk Off Florida Coast

KEY WEST, Florida (CNN) -- The USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, a retired U.S. Navy warship, embarked on a sedentary new career Wednesday on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico near Key West.

The former warship was intentionally sunk in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary between 10:20 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. ET to become the world's second-largest artificial coral reef…

…The Vandenberg was built at the Kaiser shipyard in Richmond, California, in 1943. It was commissioned as a World War II troop transport ship. After Japan surrendered, the Vandenberg was the first Navy ship to return to New York Harbor.

During the 1950s, the ship was used to transport refugees from Europe and Australia to America. In the 1960s, the Air Force used the Vandenberg as a tracking vessel for possible missile attacks, and for rocket and early space shuttle launches.

The ship was decommissioned in 1986 and was anchored with more than 25 other retired ships in Norfolk, Virginia. The Vandenberg was towed to Key West last month…”

My mother and father worked in the Richmond (CA) ship yard in 1943.  My mother was a welder and my father a welding inspector.  They were both members of the boilermaker union.
I was three years old at the time.  They had a teenage girl baby sitting me.  They said I like her a great deal.  I do not remember here at all.
Many years later I would also be a member of the boilermakers union.

“…On October 14, 2000, the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park was opened in Richmond, California, site of four Kaiser shipyards, where thousands of "Rosies" from around the country worked (although ships at the Kaiser yards were not riveted, but rather welded). Over 200 former Rosies attended the ceremony…”  My mother’s name is listed at the site.  She was a welder at the Kaiser shipyard.

200 Pounds and Holding

I am still at 200 pounds.  I only had two eggs to eat today and I am still at 200 pounds.  I just took my blood pressure and it is 150/87.  That is not good.

I signed up today for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training.  I will take the three day class in July.  I got a feeling that me not having a car could be a problem.  I will take the training and I guess if a real emergency happens Ken might let me use his old car.  But then I am not sure how he would feel about me driving his car to a disaster area.
I need to get a ham radio.  I sold my last one and I do not have one right now.  I need to get one again. I would like to get one before Hurricane season and I would like to have one when I go to the training.  It is not a ham radio organization but it would be nice for the members to know about ham radio and what can be done with ham radio.

There is going to be a hamfest in October of this year.  I did not go to the one last year.  I love going to them but I hope I have some money when I go.  There is a lot of used equipment and often dealers will have a booth and you can get a good deal on a new radio.

Field Day will be June 27th and 28th.  I hope I can make it to a field day site this year.  I hope they have one in a location that I get to without a car.  Yes,  I could just get on the ham radio, if I had one, and ask if someone in this area is heading to the event and I am sure I could get a ride.

When I attend the events above I hope to have my new cell phone and I will post a short post with a photo from the event and I may even stream a little bit of live steaming video.

Catholic priest frolicking on beach with a woman

“…After confessing his love for the mystery woman he was caught with on a South Florida beach, the Rev. Alberto Cutié says he is ready to consider taking the relationship to the next level.

Marriage and children are a definite possibility, he told The Miami Herald late Friday.

''I'm not going to rush into marriage. I know all about that,'' said the man who has counseled countless couples preparing for weddings. ``But I would like to have a family and at the same time serve God.''

Does that mean he will leave the priesthood?…”

Miami Herald

This is big news down here and in Central and South America.  This Catholic priest has a big following because of some radio broadcast and other things.
If you want to see and hear the priest and get a little idea about the story he will be on the CBS
“The Early Show” at 7 AM Monday.
I wonder if he will switch to a different religion.  I suspect he could take many of his followers with him.  If I were the Lutherans or some other church I would be offering him a church and a radio program.
He could even start his own little break away “Catholic” church.
  This might be interesting.
Rev. Alberto Cutie does his preaching and church work in Spanish.

“…Padre Alberto's fall from Roman Catholic grace has all the makings of a TV movie and, unfortunately, all the trappings of a circus.

Alberto Cutié, the charismatic 40-year-old priest and book author, was captured frolicking on a Florida beach with a woman -- their pictures on the cover of a Mexican magazine sold here. He has stepped down from his Miami Beach church, immediately apologizing for his misbehavior but vowing to keep serving the Lord.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Miami, which has rightly come under fire for years for taking its sweet time to investigate allegations of child abuse among pedophile priests, worked quickly to strip Cutié of his duties while he prays and contemplates his future…” Miami Herald

Nude Vacation

(CNN) -- “There's something about being naked that makes a person forget a layoff, pay cut or a shrunken retirement account.

At least that's how the promoters of nude travel see it.

The economic recession is "doing us a lot of favors, maybe because there's the idea that if you've lost the shirt off your back, you should go nude," said Erich Schuttauf, executive director of the American Association for Nude Recreation.

He added: "You go to a [nudist resort] and when you take off all your clothes, all the cues that tie you to the workaday world -- the ties, the suits and everything -- when that's gone, your body says it's time to relax. You get in that mode faster."

While some nude-resort owners say they're cutting back because of the recession, others said they're on par with last year's budgets or are expanding their services. Overall, being naked brings in big bucks. According to Schuttauf, the industry is valued at more than $400 million..”

I think being nude at the beach or a resort is just great.  I been posting here for years about nudism.  For information on nudism in Florida check out List of Nudity places in FL.
I just got to get over to Haulover Beach.  I have only been one time and that was back about 7 or 8 years ago when I lived in Orlando FL.  Now I live right here and I have not been.
