Boy Hit by Meteorite

“A 14-year old German boy was hit in the hand by a pea-sized meteorite that scared the bejeezus out of him and left a scar.

"When it hit me it knocked me flying and then was still going fast enough to bury itself into the road," Gerrit Blank said in a newspaper account. Astronomers have analyzed the object and conclude it was indeed a natural object from space, The Telegraph reports.

Most meteors vaporize in the atmosphere, creating "shooting stars," and never reach the ground. The few that do are typically made mostly of metals. Stony space rocks, even if they are big as a car, will usually break apart or explode as they crash through the atmosphere.

There are a handful of reports of homes and cars being struck by meteorites, and many cases of space rocks streaking to the surface and being found later.

But human strikes are rare. There are no known instances of humans being killed by space rocks…”

Earth Day 2009

This video is “Blind Spot” and it last for one hour and 25 minutes.

Blind Spot is a documentary that illustrates the current energy crisis that our way of life is facing. Whatever the measures of greed, wishful thinking, neglect or ignorance, we have put ourselves at a crossroad which offers two paths, both with dire consequences. If we continue to burn fossil fuels we will choke the life out of the planet and if we don't our way of life will collapse.

Leaving computers on overnight = $2.8 billion a year

I am guilty of leaving my computers on 24/7.  I been doing it for years.

“Admittedly I don't think much about it at all. I leave my laptop running overnight because I know it'll take five minutes or more to get things going in the morning -- not just booting up, but launching the various apps I start the day with, downloading my overnight email, filtering out the spam, and otherwise "getting settled."

But all the power wasted while computers are sitting idle overnight adds up, and one study has finally tried to measure it. The tally: An estimated $2.8 billion wasted on excess energy costs each year in the U.S. alone.

On a CO2 basis, that's 20 million tons of carbon dioxide, about the amount produced by 4 million cars on the road.

The full report is available for download here (scroll down to "PC Energy Report US 2009")…”

Two New Blogs

I just set up two new blogs.  I am looking for some people that want to post to the blog.  Right now I could use a few good conservatives to post to Show Me Conservative.  If you are a Republican and if you want to think about some issues and post to the blog then I could use your input.  Think about it and we can give it a try.
Now I do not want someone that is just going to call names and get all crazy.  I do not think that is going to work well for the blog.  I would like someone that thinks and have some ideas of their own.  You could post as often as you have content.  I know many of you are busy.  It could be something you do each day, each week or just a couple of times a month.
I will set up some sort of list with people blogging with a photo, link to send you an email and link to some site that you want to give.
When you write something feel free to post links.  So you do not have to cover everything in great details.  You can put links to sites.

If you are liberal then you can post to Show Me Progressive

If you are interested email me:  hnbbs@usa.net
Keep in mind that my blogs are pretty personal to me so do not feel bad if this does not work out.  It does not mean that I don't like you it just means it did not work for me.

How to Dispose of Unused Medication

This is a subject that is very important but I have to admit that I have not done any thinking about the subject.
For information on how to get rid of unused medications –>    wikiHow

I should have been more aware of this issue.  One of the hospitals, I worked at, had us being their hazmat officers and we got called in to take care of hazmat conditions.

What happened to the Acorns?

The Washington Post has a story "Acorn Watchers Wonder What Happened to Crop."  A few years ago I would not have paid any attention to this story.  I remember hearing about missing bees and I did not believe that story and it turned out to be true and a big story.  So now I am wondering if this story about starving, skinny and crazy squirrels might be true.
It seems naturalists and just common folks are finding that the acorns are missing.  There is no crop this year.
If you live in an area with acorns take a look around and tell us if they are missing this year.

Gustav heading for New Orleans?

gustav

New Orleans considers evacuation as Gustav looms
It is a little early to worry but not to early to start making plans.

Here is the CNN story on Gustav.
Friday is the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

No telling, at this time, where it is going to hit.  The National Hurricane Center thinks it may hit someplace between Key West (Florida) and the eastern end of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula by Saturday.
